Starting August 25, 2026, Kazakhstan launched an electronic entry permit system called QazETA. For now, it operates in a pilot mode, but in the future, it may become mandatory for citizens of many countries, including partners from the EAEU.
The new system simplifies border crossing for foreign visitors while also making migration tracking more transparent. For businesses that host foreign specialists and partners, this means new rules worth preparing for in advance.
What Is QazETA and How Does It Work
QazETA is a digital platform developed by Kazakhstan's Ministry of Internal Affairs. Through it, foreign nationals can obtain an electronic entry permit (ETA). This is not a visa but a separate pre-approval checked at the border.
Currently, the system operates in a test mode, and obtaining an ETA is not yet mandatory. However, this is just the beginning: amendments already being introduced create a basis for making the permit obligatory for citizens of certain countries.
How to Obtain the Permit
The process is entirely digital and runs through the QazETA mobile app. Applications should ideally be submitted no later than 72 hours before travel. The permit itself is valid for 180 days.
What you need to apply:
download the app;
register and confirm your phone number;
scan your passport or another accepted document;
specify the purpose of the trip, dates, and contact information.
Important: even with an ETA, the final decision on entry rests with the border officer.
Who Will Be Affected by the New Rules
The requirement is not yet mandatory for everyone. It is expected to apply to citizens of countries that have a visa-free regime with Kazakhstan. In the future, this may include partners from EAEU countries, including Russia.
Exceptions are made for:
diplomats and holders of service passports;
members of official delegations;
representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Kazakhstan.
The system is planned to be rolled out gradually until December 2026 to allow everyone time to adapt.
